Much due to his international reputation, the Czech composer Antonin Dvorák was invited to become the Director of the New York National Conservatory of Music, role that he took from 1892 to 1895. It was during that time that he wrote two of his most important works – the Symphony nº 9, “From the New World” and the String Quartet nº 12 in F Major Op. 96, “American”. The composer himself admitted having been influenced by the American folklore, namely the Black songs as well as the native Indian and the Irish songs!
Gershwin, on his turn, also had the intention of creating an American folk opera when he composed “Porgy and Bess”. The piece presented in this concert is an arrangement and a musical selection for wind quintet, which includes, among others, the famous “Summertime”. The languid atmosphere of the summer was also supremely apprehended by Samuel Barber in his “Summer Music”.
